The Mets lost again last night, and I know what most (if not all) Mets fans are thinking right now.
The season is over.
With the team now being five games out from the second Wild Card spot with just 12 games left to play in the season, it seems as though even if they win out, they won’t have a chance.
As of this moment, the Chicago Cubs hold the second Wild Card spot, the Milwaukee Brewers are just one game out, and the Philadelphia Phillies share the same five game deficit with the Mets.
But I am here to tell you to keep the faith.
DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’!
Because the Mets have such a high ceiling when it comes to their starting pitching, they always have a chance to win, no matter who they play.
Their pitching is also, at times, erratic. Especially when it comes to their bullpen.
But let’s imagine a scenario where the bullpen holds up and keeps the team in games throughout the remainder of the season. Having offensive producers such as Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto will almost always give you the chance to put runs on the board.
If the team can get guys like Robinson Cano to stay hot over the next 12 games, and the bullpen can AT LEAST be average (which is a lot to ask, I know) then they can still make the playoffs!
After their series against the Colorado Rockies, the Mets go on the road to take on the Cincinnati Reds, then return home for their last two series against the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves.
If the Mets can take at least one game from this series against the Rockies, then win the next two series against the Reds and Marlins that’s six games right there with three left to play.
I know you need other teams to lose in order to gain ground in the standings, but you can only control what you do, so why not focus on the positives?
Prior to the final series of the season the Mets have it pretty easy taking on three teams that have worse records than them. AND the team gave its fans meaningful baseball down the stretch for a change.
So, I will leave you with a phrase that all Mets fans should be familiar with.
Ya gotta believe!
