Daniel Jones has been named the new starting quarterback for the New York Giants, replacing Eli Manning. Manning has been a constant in the starting lineup for almost 15 years.
The last time Manning was told he wouldn’t be starting was back in 2017 when Geno Smith was given an opportunity to bring the Giants back to winning ways.
That only lasted one game, as Manning was named the starter again for the following week.
The Giants have lost both of their games to open the 2019-2020 season, and the decision to make the quarterback switch came this morning.
While I’m shocked that this decision was made this early in the season, I 100 percent agree with the move.
There may be some Giants fans who don’t want to hear this, but Eli hasn’t been the answer since the Giants won the Super Bowl in 2012. Manning has only led the team to one winning season since, and that was in 2016 when the team went 11 – 5.
They lost in the opening round of the playoffs to the Green Bay Packers 13 – 38.
Jones was the number six overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, and ever since the pick was made there have been questions asked of ownership and management. This is partially due to the fact that the Giants passed on Dwayne Haskins, who was picked by the division rival Washington Redskins with the fifteenth overall pick.
Jones had a very good preseason, finishing the four games with an 85.3 percent completion percentage.
Sure, preseason stats aren’t something I would place a bet on heading into the regular season, but it’s still a good place to start as a rookie in the NFL.
Only time will tell if Jones is the permanent answer for the Giants at quarterback, and we will get our first glimpse of him as a starter this Sunday.
The Giants go up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road at 4:05 p.m.
