Well, it’s official.
The Mets introduced Carlos Beltrán as their 22nd manager on Monday, Nov. 4, and as a fan I am very excited.
When I saw Beltrán put the number 15 jersey on again it gave me chills. I immediately thought back to his years on the team.
Beltrán was my second choice for Mets manager because of his lack of managerial experience. My number one choice was Joe Girardi, but the more I reflect on the decision the more I agree with it.
Girardi is more of an old school manager, and there is potential for the younger players on this Mets team to react poorly to his managing style.
Beltrán has always been a clubhouse guy. He said yesterday during his introductory press conference that he wants to be a player’s manager.
That’s important.
Beltrán is not far removed from being a player himself. And he isn’t far removed from being a world champion either.
The man knows what it takes to make it to the big stage, and he knows how to preform and get his teammates to perform.
Now, he will have to get his players to perform. And I think he can do it.
Mets’ General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen gave five reason for the hire of Beltrán over the other candidates that were interviewed. He said that he’s poised, trustworthy, he has a growth mindset, he’s committed to beating his opponent, and that he has an unrivaled appreciation and understanding of players.
I think that my favorite reason that Van Wagenen spoke of was the fact that Beltrán is committed to beating his opponent.
Van Wagenen said that, “Everybody wants to win…Carlos wants to beat his opponent. He looks at the little things. He looks for tips. He looks for any weaknesses that he can exploit in game planning.”
In order to win games, you need to know how to beat your opponent. Sure, there are going to those games where you get lucky. But most of the time you are going to have to study the team you are about to play and know what you need to do in order to secure the victory.
Obviously time will tell if Beltrán will be able to execute this in the managerial role. But Mets fans should be very excited and optimistic about the hiring of Beltrán as the new manager of the team.
